Good Morning!
We are through the first few days of school! By now we're starting to establish a routine with all of the bands but it may take a few more days before everyone is on the same page on where to be and when, especially our new 6th graders. By the end of next week everything should be worked out. I have a few items to share today: Everyone: Next Thursday we will be kicking off our annual Fundraiser. We will once again be selling discount cards featuring offers from local businesses. The cards will cost $15 this year instead of $20. We feel there is still a tremendous value with what is offered despite the reduced price. We raise money each year to help provide for additional needs the band has outside of the school budget. We are given limited funds from the school to purchase new music and new equipment (i.e. instruments etc.). Our fundraiser often allows us to purchase equipment we otherwise would not be able to afford. For example, we replaced our timpani drums last year thanks to the money we've collected from past fundraisers. Without our fundraiser, that would not have been possible. That's just one example of how the fundraiser money goes to work for the band. We would appreciate everyone's best effort in selling the discount cards. More information will be available next week when we kick off the sale on 8/29. 6th Grade Band: If you do not yet have an instrument, please try and get one as soon as possible. If you are unable to obtain an instrument please contact your child's instructor and we will make arrangements if possible. We would like everyone to have an instrument by next week so everyone gets started in lessons together. We will be teaching the students to assemble their instruments today and possibly make some sounds. Please encourage your student to practice what we've done in lessons over the weekend. They should be excited! 8th Grade Band: Please be sure to return your Code of Conduct and Transportation forms as soon as possible. They are due 8/29 (Thursday). Don't forget about the upcoming 8th Grade Night with the marching band Two Weeks from TONIGHT 9/6. We hope that everyone is able to attend. It's a special night for both the 8th grade and HS bands. Many of our 8th graders tell us later on that the 8th grade night was one of the deciding factors in their decision to continue with band at the HS. We know they'll have a great time. Report time on 9/6 is 5:30pm in the HS Choir Room. Students may wear jeans and a Louisville shirt or sweatshirt (depending on weather). There will be a party for the band after the game until 12:00 midnight in the HS cafeteria. All 8th Grade students are invited and encouraged to attend. Students may either be picked up after the game around approx. 10:00pm, or after the party at midnight. We're off and running and very excited about what this school year will bring. Please don't hesitate to contact any of the band directors if you have any questions about band related items.

Hello!
Mr. Stankey, Ms. Mariano, and Mr. Bleininger would like to welcome back all of our band students for what should be another exciting school year. We'd also like to extend a special welcome to our brand new 6th grade musicians. We look forward to working with each of you throughout the year. A few quick notes as we start the year: Fundraiser: We will begin our LMS Band Fall Fundraiser next Thursday August 29 and we will wrap up Friday Sept. 13. We will once again be selling discount cards however these will be different than the cards we've sold in the past. These cards will cost $15 each and have some really great offers from local businesses and many other offers as well. We need ever 8th Grade Band Members: We are planning our 8th Grade Night with the LHS Marching Band for the home football game against Hoover on Sept. 6 We will have more information on this special night in the coming days. 6th Grade Band Members: We are hoping to distribute instruments by the end of the week. Please contact a director if you have not yet acquired an instrument for the year. We are excited to get started with our lessons! Parents: First off, thank you for supporting your child in their decision to pursue instrumental music. We feel that we are able to offer a wonderful experience for the students. Please know that there is an expectation of individual, at-home practice for duration of the school year. 15-20 minutes or more most nights will be enough for the practice sheet logs. Speaking of practice sheets: Practice sheets will be due each Monday (or Tuesday if there isn't school Monday) and late sheets are accepted as late as Friday for reduced credit each day. Practice sheets must be signed by a parent or guardian in order for a student to receive full credit. We also ask that the students record what they are practicing in the boxes provided on the sheet. We offer extra credit to those students who attend high school band performances (football games do not count unfortunately) or other band/orchestra concerts in the area. Extra credit is also available to those students who take private lessons on their primary instrument (60 min of credit for a 30 min lesson) or students who take lessons on a secondary instrument such as piano (30 min of credit for a 30 min lesson). We want to encourage you to pursue private lessons if it is possible. There are many quality and affordable lesson teachers in the area and we would be happy to provide the names of these teachers if you are interested. The band directors also teach privately so feel free to contact us regarding lessons ( we typically do not start private lessons until the marching band season is over). We want each student to reach their fullest potential as a student musician and we look forward to starting (or continuing) that journey together. As always thank you for your support of the LMS Bands! Have a great 13-14 school year. |
